Horseplay! Ranch Adventure Camp
July 8 – 12
Give your children the chance to live the life of a ranch kid for a week!
We believe in traditional western family values so this camp is offered to children from 4 to 12 years old. Parents are also welcome to come along with their child!
Ranch adventures all take place on Big Rock Farms, an active working ranch that has been in the family for 120 years, so we only cater to small groups of 8 children a week. No simulated activities; everything we do here is real and has a purpose! If cows need herding, the kids will help! Or, if we need to haul water out to the cow pasture, the kids will be offered the opportunity to splash along in the back of the truck.
The Typical Day
Every morning we will start the day feeding the small animals and completing a few basic ranch chores before heading out to round-up horses. Once our ponies are in children will learn at their own pace and ability, how to catch, groom, saddle up and ride. (They will have all week to work on these basic horsemanship skills.)
Every day instructors will ensure that all children have equal amounts of lead-line/solo ride time (based on ability) as we go out on trail rides to look for seasonal flowers and grasses, fox dens, muskrats, coyotes and cow bones. We will go find and check the cow herd (and watch the deer one too) and of course play in the creek. Our pack pony will carry all the lunches and we’ll enjoy a picnic somewhere new each day! Each day will be different… If we discover a cow having a baby, we’ll stop to watch! (From a safe distance of course)
After being out on horses for several hours we come back to the barn, let our ponies go and work on individual rustic barn wood horse projects using resources gathered from our adventures. These are quality pieces that kids will take home at the end of the week along with a professional photo of themselves with their pony or horse, and a HorsePlay! Ranch Adventure T-shirt.
